#70. What Is the Future for Clean Fuels in Vehicles and Aircraft?

Mikala Grubb, Director, Clean Fuels Technology, Topsoe

What needs to happen to propel low carbon fuels such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) forward? We talk with Mikala Grubb from Topsoe about what needs to happen from the technology, market and policy perspective. We talked about Topsoe’s HydroFlex technology, the massive scale up happening for renewable diesel (also known as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)) and SAF and why she feels the feedstock availability question for both technologies is going to get solved.

“So I’ve been in this space actually for quite some time. I think I’m close to a decade now in this field and the development that I have seen over the last year or two has been amazing and has left me positive about the future because I feel that there have been a lot of technologies that have been developed. They have lacked funding, but they have lacked focus. There’s been no incentive. Until now, it has been people who are really passionate about trying to save the world, but now there’s actually also legislation driving towards it, at least for Europe which means that there’s a higher willingness to invest, and maybe they have also reached a certain technological maturity. So, it converts in the right direction. Now we just need to speed it up.”

Mikala Grubb holds an MSc and a PhD in Chemistry from the Technical University of Denmark. She is the head of Topsoe’s clean fuels business area. Mikala is the host of the Fuel for Thought podcast.
