Autonomous vehicles were first contemplated in the 1920s as the infographic below, from Visual Capitalist, shows. Only recently, due to advances in technology, have self-driving cars been able to overcome three primary engineering challenges: sensing the surrounding environment, processing information, and reacting to that environment. According to the consulting group BCG, there will be millions of self-driving cars on the road by 2035, creating a multi-billion dollar market and reshaping the auto industry and no doubt the fuel industry as well as the technology is coupled with electification and ride sharing.
